Ask anyone about Marcus DeLeon and eventually you end up in the garage. Not because of the cars — though there were always cars, usually somebody else's, usually fixed for free — but because of what the garage was: the place where the door stayed up, the Motown stayed on, and anybody's problem became everybody's project. The memories gathered here keep circling the same man from different angles. The union rep who fought hardest for the people who asked quietest. The coach who kept fifteen years of rosters and remembered every name on them. The neighbor whose snow shovel you heard before sunrise but never caught. The father at the grill every Sunday, making ribs for however many people showed up, which was never the number Elena planned for. He said "we'll figure it out" so often that it stopped being a phrase and became a promise. Taped inside his toolbox, in his own handwriting, was the closest thing he had to a philosophy: take care of each other. Judging by the hundred and forty people gathered on this page, it worked.
